In the Dominican Republic
baseball is the national spectator sport. Many of the top American major league players have come from here, including Alex Rodríguez, Sammy Sosa and Pedro Martínez. A professional winter season runs from mid-November through mid-February, after which the winner goes on to compete in the
Caribbean Series . In addition to the professional season, amateur winter seasons take place in San Francisco de Macorís, San Juan de la Maguana, San Cristóbal and a few other towns.
The Cuban national league, the Serie Nacional de Beisbol , takes place over a regular season that usually begins in October and finishes with the playoffs in March and April. Every provincial capital has a baseball stadium and, during the season, teams play five times a week, so there's a good chance of catching a game if you're in the country during the summer months.
Like the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico has produced many ballplayers who've succeeded in the US major leagues, among them the great Roberto Clemente. The island competes in the Caribbean Series against teams from Venezuela, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, and the season runs from November to March
