An excellent way to see some untouched, and often protected, indigenous wildlife, as well as enjoying the sunshine, is to go hiking . The lush rainforests of Puerto Rico, Dominica, Antigua, the Dominican Republic and St Lucia, the coastal hikes of St Croix or the huge national park that constitutes most of St John in the US Virgin Islands, are all highly recommended. For more detailed information about hiking, see the individual island sections.

The best plan is to start early in the morning and cover plenty of distance before the midday heat sets in, or else choose a hike that goes through forest. Some of the mountain trails in the Caribbean are badly marked and even dangerous; check with the relevant tourist authority about conditions before you head off, and be sure to tell someone where you are going if you are planning to hike alone. There are also plenty of tour companies that offer private hiking trips if you'd prefer to travel with a group.

Remember to bring plenty of water, a hat, a spare pair of socks, a jumper, a map, compass and first-aid kit, sunblock, a sandwich and some high-energy snack foods, insect repellent, sunglasses and a camera. Many Caribbean trails have waterfalls and swimming holes along the way, so bring a bathing suit if a dip might be on the agenda.

Camping is illegal on many Caribbean islands; on the few where it is allowed, permission is usually required in advance from the relevant government department and a fee is payable.
