The
Caribbean
is not a
malarial
zone,
but
cases of
malaria
have
been
reported
in the
Dominican
Republic,
mainly
along
the
Haitian
border.
While
the risk
to
travellers
is
small,
if you
intend
to
travel
in this
area
it's a
good
idea to
take a
course
of
prophylactics
(usually
chloroquine),
available
from a
doctor
or
travel
clinic.
There
are
slightly
higher
rates of
dengue
fever
,
another
mosquito-borne
illness
whose
symptoms
resemble
those of
malaria
but
include
extreme
aches
and
pains in
the
bones
and
joints,
along
with
fever
and
dizziness.
The only
cure for
dengue
fever is
rest and
painkillers,
and like
malaria
the only
precaution
you can
take is
to avoid
mosquito
bites.
