The currency for the US and British Virgin Islands is the US dollar . Branches of major banks , most with ATMs , are located in most towns. Major credit cards are accepted widely on the islands at hotels, restaurants and car rental agencies. However, there's always a risk that some small out-of-the-way place won't take them, so it pays to travel with some cash if you plan to go off the beaten track. Travellers' cheques are also widely accepted and most hotels allow guests to cash personal cheques. Be warned that there's a government room tax (8 percent in the USVI; 7 percent in the BVI) on all accommodation and an 8-15 percent service charge on everything else in hotels, so check bills before tipping . The standard tip for good service is 15 percent in restaurants and bars; around 10 percent for taxis.
