Local calls on public payphones cost 25 cents for five minutes. To call the islands
from overseas dial the international dialling code + 1+ area code + number (we've given instructions on
calling overseas from the Virgin Islands). For
international calls you are best off using a prepaid phone card, such as the Virgin Island Traveler's Card, which is available in US$10 increments from shops, post offices and most hotels. If you carry a
mobile phone , try dialing 6611 to enquire about use on the island, though it's best to inquire with your carrier well in advance of making your trip.
Post offices (open generally Mon-Fri 7.30am-4.30pm & Sat 7.30am-noon) can be found in most main towns. However, many hotels will sell you stamps and mail letters for you.
Some hotels offer free internet access to guests; otherwise you'll have to log on at one of the cybercafιs - they're not widespread but most major towns will have one. The two main USVI newspapers are The V.I. Daily News and The Independent - both on St Thomas. In the BVI it's the BVI Beacon (Thurs) and The Island Sun (Sat), plus the free weekly, Limin' Times , which carries listings of upcoming events.
The country code for the BVI is 284; for the USVI it's 340.
